COLLINGWOOD, ONTARIO A 25-year-old rookie logged her first-ever grand prix win today, defeating some of the hottest riders and horses on the Canadian circuit in the $60,000 Kubota Cup in Collingwood. Carley Campbell-Cooper, of Elora, Ontario, on Rocca jumped-off for the victory against yesterday's $50,000 grand prix winner and eight-time Olympian, Ian Millar on Redefin. Also in the tie-breaker was Alberta native and long-time U.S. resident Darrin Dlin on Catwalk who have returned to Canada for this season. That combination has been the winner of two World Cup Qualifiers in the last six weeks. Amy Millar, of Perth, Ontario, on Costa Rica Z was also in the race, following a second-place finish in yesterday's grand prix and in the heat of a outstanding season. Rounding out the five-way tie-breaker was another rookie, 28-year-old Hyde Moffat, of Brantford, Ontario, on Denver.
"I'm very excited" Campbell-Cooper said, expressing her gratitude to Rocca's former rider, Keean White, who arranged for her to have the ride. "I've only been riding him for two and a half weeks", she said "but he's trying his heart out for me". Campbell-Cooper trains with Canadian Equestrian Team veteran Beth Underhill. Campbell-Cooper's previous biggest accomplishment was being a member of the gold medal winning Ontario Team at the 2003 North American Young Riders' Championships.
In the qualifying standings of the Kubota Cup eastern conference, Amy Millar still leads after a second-place in the eastern kick-off in Quebec and fourth-place today. Darrin Dlin's third place today shot him from sixth to second in the standings. Jonathon Millar and Fancy Hill were third before today's contest and hung on, close behind Dlin, with a tenth-place finish today. As Official Spokesperson for the Kubota Cup, today's second-place finisher, Ian Millar, does not earn points, but does receive an automatic qualification to the Kubota Cup National Final. The concluding leg of the eastern conference will be held in Halifax in October.
The Kubota Cup National Final is the only show jumping competition in Canada that guarantees participation from both eastern and western Canada. This year's Final is shaping up to be not only a showdown between east and west, but a showdown between three members of the Millar family, who have found themselves in jump-offs against each other several times already this year. They are believed to be the only father/son/daughter show jumping partnership in the world, with two generations active at the same time.
The Kubota Cup National Final will be on November 3 at Toronto's Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
